Forman shares NBA executive award with Riley

 

Back in the early 1980s, fresh out of college and eager to make his mark on the sport he loved, Gar Forman took a coaching job at College of the Desert in Palm Desert, Calif.
At the time, Pat Riley was the slicked-back, Armani-wearing coaching giant for the Lakers who had his team's training camps there.
Now, in as unexpected a result as Forman's success story, the two are the NBA's co-Executives of the Year.
"Obviously, Pat Riley has been a legend in this sport for a long time," Forman said.

Giving a grade to our NFL Draft grades

Professional sports general managers and scouts, particularly in the NFL, love to tell reporters that while their bad draft picks remain attached to them forever, the media’s bad analysis disappears into the ether. They would love to see the media’s day-after draft grades get graded a few years later.
And so we have this look at The Miami Herald’s NFL draft grades from 2008 and 2009, two drafts with some time to flower. Overall, grade the graders — or, more accurately, the grader, this reporter — out to a C-.

Which NFL Team Did the Best in 2011 NFL Draft?

Now that the 2011 NFL draft is over, and football fans are in a state of limbo as the labor dispute will be handled by the courts, we have a little time to see which team did the best job drafting players.
Without a doubt the consensus seems to be that the Super Bowl Champion Green Bay Packers turned in the best 2011 NFL Draft class. Despite picking at the back of each round the Packers look to have landed four future starters, and while every pick was made for value they really addressed their team needs.

MSU hockey: Anastos fills staff with four Spartans

New Michigan State hockey coach Tom Anastos' staff will have a definite Spartan flavor.
Anastos on Monday announced his four-person coaching team, and it includes two new faces and two holdovers from the previous staff.
Former MSU All-America forward Kelly Miller has been hired as a full-time assistant, while former Spartan goaltender Mike Gilmore will serve as a volunteer coach and work with the team's goalies.
Anastos retained veteran MSU assistant Tom Newton, who will begin his 22nd year in the program next fall, and video coordinator Adam Nightingale, a former Spartan forward who started his position last fall.

Colts to build as always: through draft

Though a sea of uncertainty has the NFL in its grips, a few certainties remain.
The annual draft, the last bit of league business assured by the expired collective bargaining agreement, begins Thursday night. It spans three days, consists of seven rounds and 254 selections, and remains the lifeblood of the Indianapolis Colts.
"We say get a good player everywhere, anywhere. They'll help," Colts vice chairman Bill Polian said Friday. He will be overseeing his 14th draft for the Colts.

Dodgers hope a rested Casey Blake means a better Casey Blake

 

Blake, the 37-year-old third baseman, will be given more days off this season, in hopes he can improve his .248 batting average from 2010.

Rather than bend at the waist, Casey Blake gingerly squatted down to grab the crossword puzzle from his locker Sunday, evidence of the pain that's suddenly sidelined him two weeks before the Dodgers break spring training camp.
"It was tough to sleep last night," the veteran third baseman said of the apparent muscle strain behind his right rib cage, which hit Blake while he ran out a sacrifice bunt Saturday in a Cactus
